Karkonosze dawniej znane jako Góry Olbrzymie. W nazwie tej jest wiele prawdy, ponieważ to najwyższe pasmo Sudetów i zarazem całych Czech rozciąga się na długości 70 km miejscami osiągając 20 km szerokości. Ich punkty graniczne to Przełęcz Szklarska na zachodzie i Przełęcz Lubawska na wschodzie, a najwyższym szczytem jest Śnieżka, mająca wysokość 1602 m n. P. M.
